Who are we?

True Peace Toronto is a group of mindfulness practitioners who meet to practice and learn mindfulness together. Our practice is based on the Zen Buddhist teachings of the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh. We come from a variety of backgrounds and religious traditions.

Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present moment. It is the continuous practice of touching life deeply in every moment of daily life. To be mindful is to be truly alive, present and at one with those around you and with what you are doing.

In practicing together as a Sangha, as a community, our practice of mindfulness becomes more joyful, relaxed and steady. We are bells of mindfulness for each other, supporting and reminding each other along the path of practice. With the support of the community, we can practice to cultivate peace and joy within and around us, as a gift for all of those we love and care for. We can cultivate our solidity and freedom - solid in our deepest aspiration and free from our fears, misunderstandings and our suffering.

Interested in learning about mindfulness? Come to a weekly practice session.

5 day Retreat with Joanne Friday - March 28 to April 1 PDF Print

"Coming home to ourselves - finding freedom in every moment"

This is a 5 day mindfulness meditation retreat with most respected dharma teacher Joanne Friday. Joanne has been teaching in this tradition since 2003, when she received the Lamp Transmission from Thich Nhat Hanh, her teacher for twenty years.

Attending a 5 day retreat allows your mindfulness and concentration to deepen. It is a wonderful opportunity to observe your body and your mind, open your heart, and look deeply into your habits of mind and your suffering. Come home to yourself and find freedom in every moment!

The retreat will include sitting meditation, outdoor walking meditation, eating meditation, total relaxation, working meditation, dharma discussion and daily dharma talks by Joanne.

Date: Wednesday, March 28 - Sunday, April 1, 2012

Location: Sugar Ridge Retreat Centre, Midland, Ontario

Cost:         Until March 1:  $410         After March 1:  $430

The cost includes accommodation and food. Rides will be arranged.

Please note that this cost does not include dana for Joanne Friday. Joanne shares her knowledge and experience of the teachings with us freely and generously in the spirit of compassion, and receives no compensation for her offering. She is a full-time dharma teacher and so relies on donations (dana) for her income. This is a wonderful opportunity to support Joanne and to practice generosity. When we offer dana we give generously yet within our means, in the spirit of interbeing and reflecting on the value of the precious gift we have been offered in the transmission of these teachings.

A donation box will be available at the retreat to make an offering to Joanne. Suggested donation for the reatreat is $200 or an amount appropriate to your means. You are encouraged to bring a cash donation, as the money will be given directly to Joanne. Because of this, donations are not eligible for tax receipts.

To register, please complete the following 3 steps:

1) Print and fill out the Retreat Registration and Liability Form (download attachment below)

2) Fill out the Retreat Information Form

3) Attach your cheque for payment (payable to True Peace Sangha) to your completed Retreat Registration Form and hand deliver (at a meditation session) or mail to the retreat registrar Cindy Carroll. (address is on the registration form)

You must complete ALL THREE of these steps to register for the retreat.

Space will be limited to 35 participants and we expect it to fill quickly, so please don't delay in registering.

Limited scholarships are available for students and low income. The number of scholarships available will depend on the donations we receive from participants for the Scholarship Fund. If you wish to attend the retreat and would like to request a scholarship, please indicate this on your registration form and otherwise complete your registration. Someone from the organizing committee will contact you.
